Suppliers protest to demand payments owed by the Ecuadorian government and the police repress them

“We want to eat,” says one of the banners carried by one of the protesters

State providers demand the payments owed by the Government, in some cases since 2019. In the middle of the demonstration, they claimed that members of the National Police acted in a violent manner.

They are providers from various areas who have been unpaid for several months and must continue to provide the service to the State because, in case of non-compliance, they would have to pay a fine.

There are health, food and, above all, security providers. Thousands of families have been affected by not receiving the resources that correspond to them.

They say that the Ministry of Finance does not give them a concrete answer and that the Government does not have money and that in the next few days they hope to solve it. The group that groups together almost 150 micro-enterprises has indicated that it is willing to negotiate to reach an agreement for payments, but when they see that they are not being listened to, they continue with the de facto measures.

There are cases of security companies that the Government owes them since November 2019. One of the representatives of these companies mentioned that she cannot pay the staff and they, therefore, cannot bring food to their families.

“We want to eat,” says one of the banners carried by one of the protesters this Wednesday during the peaceful sit-in they held outside the Government Platform, north of Quito. Later, they set fire to cardboard to close the tracks.

The providers claimed that the police came to the scene and violently repressed their protest.

“We are small businessmen who demand that the Government pay us what is due to us, we do not want bonds, we want the money that they promised to pay at the time of making the contracts,” said another protester.
