Raúl Chicaiza denounced political pressure to involve previous government authorities in the Balda case.
The former agent of the Ecuadorian Police, Raúl Chicaiza, convicted of the 2012 kidnapping of political activist Fernando Balda in Colombia, Chicaiza declared this Monday that since the beginning of August he requested refuge in Argentina due to threats against him and because he has not received help from the authorities of his country, despite being a protected witness.
Chicaiza assured that he is awaiting a favorable response to his request and that his involvement in the Balda case “was a political issue.”

In a virtual press conference, the former police officer said that the former president of the Council for Citizen Participation, Julio César Trujillo, and the former counselor of the Presidency, Santiago Cuesta, had pressured him to grant him the benefits of effective cooperation.
Chicaiza is in Argentina after regaining his freedom after serving 70 percent of his sentence, he claimed that Balda was selling spy equipment in Colombia and that he tried to undermine democracy.
He added that due to political interests in attacking former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, he was pressured in the case, and was even threatened to involve him in another.
