Mexico asks the OAS to respect the appointment of Pedro Abrao as Executive Secretary of the IACHR

The executive secretary of the IACHR, Pedro Abrao, was appointed for the first time in 2016.

The government of Mexico expressed its discomfort at the decisions of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) which, according to the country, affect the autonomy and independence of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

This pronouncement comes from the decision of Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS, not to recognize the renewal of Paulo Abrao as Executive Secretary of the IACHR. Abrao has been leading the institution since 2016.

The OAS reported that Almagro’s decision is based on alleged “complaints” against Abrao, while the IACHR observes this action as an “attack on his autonomy and independence.”

On the other hand, the Mexican government affirms that it will not support any action that threatens the independence of the IACHR, and also requests respect for the internal processes of the institution, which the OAS recognizes.

Mexico confirms its commitment to the institutions that make up the Inter-American Human Rights System and asks that they recognize Pedro Abrao as executive secretary of the IACHR.
