Judge of the Provincial Court of Pichincha was suspended

The Council of the Judiciary adopted this measure while clarifying the legal situation of the accused for alleged illicit enrichment.

The judge of the Provincial Court of Pichincha, Henry Cáliz, was suspended from his duties while he is under investigation for illicit enrichment. The announcement was made by the President of the Judicial Council, María del Carmen Maldonado, through her Twitter account.

The official pointed out that before the facts that are public knowledge, the justice service must be precautionary while the judicial server is investigated.

Last Wednesday, during the trial to file charges for alleged illicit enrichment, Judge Wilman Terán ordered alternative measures such as the prohibition of Judge Cáliz leaving the country and did not accept the request for preventive detention requested by the Prosecutor’s Office.

In 2018, the Financial Analysis Unit (UAFE) investigated Cáliz and his family. As a result of that study, operations for about USD 2 million were found that were not justified.

The investigations were developed as a result of a video that circulated on social networks in which Judge Cáliz mentioned:

“If you have an economic need, but you have a property and you want to sell it, we buy it with cash.”

This video, as well as the publications made on social networks, led the UAFE to investigate Cáliz and its reports were delivered to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The judge has on the page of inquiries of the Judicial Branch more than 10 processes.
