Retired soldiers demand payment of their pensions and lack of access to medicines

There are 44.678 pensioners from the Social Security Institute of the Armed Forces (ISSFA)

Passive service members are protesting in the streets due to delays in the payment of their retirement pensions, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, so that the Government complies with its obligations.

44,678 pensioners from the Institute of Social Security of the Armed Forces (ISSFA) are affected by delays in payments. We denounce the lack of access to medicines and other benefits as retirees, said the main member of the ISSFA, Juan Carlos Robalino.

Every weekend, with masks and posters, the retired military had to take to the streets to demand that the Ministry of Finance pay their pensions. The commander general of the Navy, Darwin Jarrín, again asked the central government to execute these payments at the corresponding time.

On June 15, it was the last protest of the retirees of the Armed Forces. Older adults said they did not mind the pandemic and preferred to go out and claim their rights.

Defense Minister Olswaldo Jarrín reported on June 11 that he reached an agreement with the Ministry of Finance for the payment of USD $ 220 million of the state debt with ISSFA. With this amount, he said, they cover the payments of these six months of pensions.

In this seventh month, it is still unknown if there was a new agreement or mechanism to pay the pensions owed.
