Graves in cemeteries of Quito due to the increase in deaths from Covid-19

Every day more graves are opened to give space to dozens of corpses after the increase in deaths in Quito. The capital is the city hardest hit by the Ecuadorian coronavirus pandemic.

The increase of corpses by the coronavirus in the capital grows daily and the authorities are preparing to contain an emergency in the event of a possible overflow in the treatment of this type of death.

The death certificates of the Civil Registry indicate that there was an increase of 34.7% of deaths in the months of March, April, May and June 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.

That means that this year there was an increase of 1,487 deaths.

Although not all were specifically for COVID-19. In June, when the capital changed lights, there were 1,803 deaths in the province. 698 more than in the same month of 2019.

The number of out-of-hospital deaths associated with the Coronavirus in Quito continues to rise. In the last five days, between July 17 and 21, 26 bodies were removed.

According to the latest report from the Municipality of Quito, until July 21 there were 174 cases. Of these, 54 confirmed by COVID-19; 116, by presumption; and 4, in support of criminalistics.

In the public highway 20 corpses have been removed; 136 in homes; and 14, in the elderly. Last Sunday there were 9 cases, on Monday 5 and yesterday2.
