(Prensa Latina) Chile’s industrial production fell 5.7 percent in May compared to the same month the previous year, the State National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Tuesday.
The INE detailed that the worst drop was recorded in the manufacturing line with 13.3 percent, mainly affected by the decrease in food processing amid the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Already in April the manufacturing branch had registered a reduction of 5.9 percent, also influenced by the health crisis in the country, which reported the first Covid-19 case in early March.
Likewise, in the fifth month of 2020, the indicator that measures the production of electricity, gas and water fell 3.2 percent compared to May 2019.
Only the mining production index reported an uptick of 2.1 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, thanks to the greater activity of metal mining, with 1.6 due to the 1.3 rise in the extraction and processing of copper, the main economic item in the country.
Another indicator that suffered a sharp drop as a result of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic was commercial activity, which fell 23.5 percent in May and from which only supermarkets were saved, which have not closed their doors and grew 2.3 percent.
