(Prensa Latina) Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou will head the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) temporarily at the final segment of the virtual Summit of heads of State on Thursday.
His predecessor, Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez, will transfer that responsibility in a bloc shared by their countries with Argentina and Brazil as active members.
Since Monday, previous meetings coordinated by the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry have dealt with the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the region, where the disease has spread widely. At the two following sessions, the ministers of Economy and presidents of Central Banks met, and the preparatory meeting of the Common Market Group was held with the presence of the Associated States.
Former Foreign Minister Ernesto Talvi, who held that post until Wednesday, said that during Uruguay’s six-month presidency of MERCOSUR, he will give the bloc ‘a boost that will allow the country to conquer markets, attract investors and generate jobs, which will be sorely needed.’
