(Prensa Latina) Jose Angel Covarrubias, alias ‘El Mochomo’ and a key figure in the disappearance and murder of 43 students-teachers from Ayotzinapa, was again arrested after a judge released him, the Mexican Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed today.
The dangerous criminal, one of the leaders of the Guerreros Unidos cartel, to everyone’s surprise, was released by a federal judge from the maximum security prison in the Altiplano, located in the Mexican municipality of Aloyola, under the untenable argument that the arrest warrant was from 2014. However, he was immediately re-arrested by investigation agents of the Attorney General’s Office, in compliance with a new arrest warrant that eliminates the previous one.
In this way, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office prevented Covarrubias Salgado from leaving Cefereso No. 1 in the Altiplano.
El Mochomo crossed the sentry box at the Altiplano prison to go to the parking lot where his parents and lawyer were already waiting for him, but before that he was surrounded by police who put him in a van and later in a helicopter to take him to other facilities in Mexico City. Covarrubias had been arrested last Wednesday evening in the municipality of Metepec, and was immediately taken to the federal prison of the Altiplano on charges of organized crime.
The defense of who is also identified as the leader of the criminal group ‘Los Guerreros Unidos’, and who is held responsible for giving the order for the massacre of the 43 students-teachers in Ayotzinapa in 2014, indicated that the authority has not revealed the reason for the re-arrest and accused that he could not even have access to the court order.
Arturo Rodriguez, who acted as his lawyer, said there was no other charge pending against his client, so his re-arrest is not justified.
