The pandemic in Quito is not controlled, there are 50 people dying without finding intensive care units, says expert

The number of positive cases depends on the number of tests that are done, and is currently too low.

Santiago Ron, professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE), expressed concern about the number of Covid infections19 in Quito, as there are not enough PCR tests to demonstrate the reality of the epidemiological curve.

The evolutionary biology expert indicated that the country is barely carrying out six tests for every thousand people, which is very little in the South American context.

“There are statistics that suggest that the situation is exceptionally serious in Ecuador and especially in Pichincha.”

Despite this, he stated that only in the first week of July did the percentage of positive cases reach 54%, and the second, 53%. The World Health Organization recommends that to determine the control of the pandemic this percentage should be less than 5%.

“So far there is no country where the level of positivity is so high, this is an indicator that there is a large number of infected and that it is increasing.”

For this reason, he criticized the statements of the authorities that have guaranteed that the pandemic is controlled when the Health Minister himself, Juan Carlos Zeballos, has recognized that there are 50 people waiting for Intensive Care Units.

“Which means that there are 50 people dying and that they have no space in the UCIS of the capital.”

He remarked that Zeballos’ assertions have been opposed to scientific evidence since he took office.
