The director of “Rabia” or “Sin muertos no hay carnaval” has been selected to be part of the group that chooses and awards the films with an “Oscar”
The Ecuadorian film director, Sebastián Cordero, received an invitation to be part of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences that awards the “Óscar” awards.
The director of “Ratas, Ratones y Rateros” is one of the 819 artists invited this year by the “Academy” and if he accepts the invitation, Cordero will vote in the selection of films nominated for the prestigious award, and in turn, will choose to the winners at the award ceremony next year.
Among those chosen by the American Academy are 8 Latin American directors, three Colombians: Alejandro Landes Jorge Alí Triana and Martha Rodríguez; two Mexicans: Felipe Cazals and Luis Estrada; a Chilean: Andrés Wood; a Franco-Brazilian: Vicent Carelli; and the Ecuadorian Sebastián Cordero.
Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio, star of “Roma”, was also included as a member of the academy.
Of the total number of guests invited by the film institution, 45% were women and 36% minorities, according to the statement, and 49% of the guests come from 68 countries.
The institution announced that the 93rd edition of the Oscar awards ceremony, scheduled for February 28, 2021, will be moved to April 25 of the same year.
The current president of the Academy, David Rubin, noted that it is an honor to welcome notable “traveling companions in the film arts and sciences.”
In addition, he added that “we have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more than now.”
Sebastián Cordero has an extensive career in the seventh art. His first feature film was “Ratas, Ratones y Rateros” in 1999, a social drama film that won 12 awards and toured 50 international festivals.
The director made “Crónicas” in 2004, five years later he directed “Rabia”, in 2011 he made “El Pescador” and the fiction “Europa Report” in 2013. In 2016, Cordero premiered his latest work, “Sin muertos no hay carnaval” , a drama that portrays a dispute over a territory occupied by several families from Guayaquil and an elite family from Buenos Aires.
