The Cotopaxi Indigenous and Peasant Movement requests to maintain mandatory isolation until May 31

The leaders of the Cotopaxi Indigenous and Peasant Movement (MICC) ask the country’s mayors to maintain quarantine, due to the health emergency, for a longer time.

The pronouncement was made after the announcement by the National Government to move from ‘isolation’ to social ‘distancing’, with the application of the traffic light system, starting Monday, May 4, 2020.

“This decision does not correspond to technical criteria or medical recommendations. There are interests of businessmen and politicians who are forcing to adopt this measure ”, assured Leonidas Iza, president of the MICC.

According to Iza, compulsory isolation in the cantons must continue until May 31, 2020. The leader indicated that in the rural sector, cases of covid-19 are just beginning to be registered.

In addition, he said that the authorities of the Ministry of Public Health and the Emergency Operations Committees do not disclose the real figures on people infected and deceased by the coronavirus.

“We call on the community authorities to continue the” stay at home or in the fields “campaigns until further dispositions from national leaders,” said Iza. (C.D.A.)
