Mexico suspends activities until April 30 due to health emergency

The Central American country exceeds a thousand cases of infections with coronavirus.

Mexico declared a health emergency by COVID-19 and extended the suspension of non-essential activities in the public and private sectors until April 30, 10 days more than expected in previous days.

The measures are mandatory, but citizens are called upon to comply with them as if it were a suggestion, which caused confusion.

Mexico already registers 28 deaths and 1,094 confirmed cases of coronavirus, eight deaths and 101 more infections than the previous day.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that the General Health Council determined the relevance of declaring a health emergency due to force majeure.

The declaration allows the Ministry of Health to dictate the necessary actions to attend the emergency and to give guidelines to the different government secretariats to protect companies and workers, as well as guarantee the food supply to the population.

The Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, mentioned that the actions taken are to stop the spread of the virus and urged the entire population to take shelter in their homes, and strictly to those over 60, pregnant women and people with diagnoses of hypertension, diabetes or heart disease, which have higher risks against the coronavirus.

Days ago, the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador was criticized for not taking these measures and rather motivating citizens to support the economy and carry out their tasks.
