Health personnel and the sick should use face masks, but this is not enough if there is no proper hand washing.
Tarik Jasarevic, spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO), indicated that the use of masks can give a false sense of security to those who wear them and distract them from other essential prevention measures such as washing their hands.
Jasarevic indicated that the use of masks is not required for healthy people and that they should only be used by the sick and healthcare personnel who cannot carry out their work without the necessary protective material.
From the beginning of the pandemic, Jasarevic insisted that people who wear masks are not necessarily protected, because if they are not properly placed or if they touch their faces, there is a risk of contagion, because the virus enters the body by the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth.
The WHO warns that several countries experience a shortage of facemasks due to the pandemic, so it urged people not to keep this input at home.
According to the daily count of the health organization, the disease has so far caused 693,224 infected and more than 33,000 deaths.
The countries most affected by order of severity are: United States, Italy, Spain and China.
The spokesperson said that several laboratories are currently developing serological tests to detect the coronavirus antibodies in a person and to know if they were ever infected. These tests will have to be validated by independent scientific mechanisms, but once they can be used, they will better define the COVID-19 mortality rate.
