Áñez buys department in Bolivia during Covid-19 pandemic

A local media outlet revealed that Bolivia’s de facto president, Jeanine Áñez, bought an apartment as other governments prepare to fight the coronavirus.

The pandemic of the new Covid-19 coronavirus has reached almost every country in the world, including Bolivia, which on March 10 presented its first two positive cases.

Governments have taken forceful steps to contain the spread of the virus, while de facto President Jeanine Áñez acquired an apartment.

The local media La Estrella de Oriente reported that Áñez bought the house for an amount higher than that presented in the Affidavit of Assets and Income, in November 2019. She registered a total of “active assets” worth 133,300 Bolivians (19,275 dollars), therefore, which does not justify the remaining 544,700 Bolivians (more than $ 78,000) for the acquisition.

However, the de facto Minister of Communication, Isabel Fernández, tried to clarify the situation with a letter from the National Bank of Bolivia (BNB) that “certifies” a loan granted to Áñez to make the purchase of the department, reports the Primera Línea newspaper.

This apartment is located in the Los Tocos urbanization, of the exclusive Solaris condominium, and was purchased on March 9. According to the document, the house has a suite with a private dressing room, two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room and a living room.

The position of Áñez and other members of the de facto government has been strongly criticized, because while the authorities reiterate to the population that “there is still a lot of sacrifice to be made in this fight against the virus”, which so far has left 28 confirmed cases, the de facto president increases her assets.
