CONAIE urges the Ecuadorian government to reestablish relations with Cuba for aid in the treatment of Covid-19

They explained that in this global crisis, humanity requires governments to cease ideological positions and cooperate for the well-being of its inhabitants.

This Thursday, March 19, 2020, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) asked the Government to request the cooperation and help of medical and medical professionals from Cuba to face the expansion of COVID-19.

In a statement, CONAIE considers that in light of the levels of spread of the coronavirus in the country, “as an urgent measure” the Ecuadorian Executive should “consider the restoration of diplomatic relations with Cuba and request its assistance in specialized medicines for the COVID-19 treatment ».

In this sense, the text mentions interferon Alpha 28 and ensures that its efficacy “has scientific evidence and cases of success in patients” in China and Spain.

In addition, he points out that although the medicine “does not constitute a cure”, it helps with the treatment along with other medicines to reduce possible deaths and combat the spread of the new coronavirus. He calls for “medical cooperation” with Cuba to be able to count on the participation of its doctors and specialists.

CONAIE affirmed that “Ecuador must establish the necessary rapprochements with countries that are willing to offer specialized assistance in this global crisis, since humanity requires that governments cease their ideological positions and cooperate for the well-being and health of its inhabitants.”

On November 20, Ecuador and Cuba signed an act that definitively terminated six specific professional services agreements in the scientific and technical assistance areas between the two countries.

A total of 382 Cuban health professionals who worked in 23 of the 24 provinces of Ecuador returned to Cuba at the time, after the government of President Lenín Moreno previously announced the end of the health agreements and that the doctors of the island would be replaced by locals.

Cuba maintains around 30,000 health professionals in 65 countries on various continents.

In the last year, Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia have concluded Cuban programs in those South American countries, as denounced by the Executive of the Caribbean island itself, due to pressure from the Administration of US President Donald Trump.
