Sri Lankan Parliament to elect new president next week

The Sri Lankan Parliament will elect the country’s new president on July 20, the head of the Legislative house Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced after a crucial meeting of leaders from all parties.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has not yet submitted his formal resignation, but announced that he would do so the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, July 13, according to local media.

Also, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he would step aside when a new government is formed.

When Rajapaksa’s resignation is received on Wednesday, Parliament will meet on July 15 to announce the vacancy and would reconvene on July 19 to accept nominations for the presidential post, Abeywardena said.

A parliamentary vote would be held on July 20 to elect the new Head of State, the Daily Mirror website reported.

Sri Lanka, a country of 22 million people, which mainly imports resources is under the worst economic crisis in seven decades, with millions of people struggling to buy food, medicine, fuel and other essentials. The State has no monetary funding to cover for imports.
