Bolivia to financially compensate victims of military dictatorships

The Plurinational Legislative Assembly of Bolivia (ALP, in Spanish) on Monday passed a bill to financially compensate victims of violence under the unconstitutional governments from 1964 to 1982.

The ALP allocated 99.9 million Bolivians (over $1,449,000) to this exceptional compensation for those affected by the military dictatorships.

The decision, whose 130 members of the Chamber of Deputies approved the bill past June, and the 36 Senators did so on Friday, benefitting 1,714 people.

The victims, who called for such a compensation for about ten years have kept a permanent vigil for this purpose since 2012.

The bill was sent to the government for enactment and publication in the Official Gazette, whereas the Ministry of Economy and Finance, through the General Treasury will be in charge of the administration of he budget.

The payments for each person will range between $500 and $10,000, Minister of Justice, Ivan Lima, said.
