The Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador (MSP) indicated that there are still no cases of monkeypox in the country.
However, the MSP generated the Epidemiological Alert for the National Health System with the aim of initiating and recognizing the surveillance processes for this virus.
“In relation to people who enter and leave the country, they are urged to report any symptoms related to what is also known as monkeypox. Similarly, if you enter Ecuador, you must inform if your country of origin is considered an endemic area and notify the nearest health center, “says the statement.
Symptoms of monkeypox are fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion. A rash can develop, often starting on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body, including the genitals.
“According to the Pan American Health Organization, as of May 20, 2022, 11 countries have reported cases: Australia, Germany, Belgium, Canada, France, the United States, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In America, 3 cases of monkeypox were reported in Canada (2 cases) and the United States (1 case)”.
Monkeypox, according to the report of the international organization, is traditionally transmitted mainly by direct or indirect contact with blood, body fluids, skin lesions or mucous membranes of infected animals.
Secondary or person-to-person transmission can occur through close contact with infected respiratory secretions or skin lesions of an infected person, or with objects recently contaminated with fluids from the patient or materials from the lesion.
“In this sense, citizens are asked to maintain hand hygiene, report suspicious symptoms and also inform themselves through official channels,” the statement said.
