Jaime Vargas said he is not going to “sit or greet with this murderous government” in a meeting in Zumbahua, this Sunday, March 1, also reports that the candidate for the presidency of 2021 will be a result of consensus of the bases.
Jaime Vargas, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) said they will not accept an Executive Decree similar to 883, such as the one that eliminated fuel subsidies, in October 2019.
This Sunday, March 1, in Zumbahua (Cotopaxi), Vargas in his speech at an assembly of one of the grassroots organizations of the Equarunari, a subsidiary of the Sierra de la Conaie, referred to the statements of the president, Lenín Moreno, in around the targeting of subsidies that would be implemented in the first quarter of 2020.
“The Conaie will not accept another similar decree. We have said it with frontality. Our communities are activated and ask us what will happen to the announcements of the President of the Republic, ”said the leader of the indigenous movement.
He recalled in his speech, “rightly” robbed “the police and the Armed Forces. Jaime Vargas is not going to sit or greet with this murderous government. There will be no agreements with this Government that has gone against the People. ”
Leonidas Iza, leader of the Cotopaxi Peasant Movement, was also at the event. Where both leaders have made tours, they claim not to promote their names for the presidential elections of 2021. But they have not said otherwise.
According to Vargas, the “majority of the provincial coordinators” of the Conaie have said that an eventual candidate for the presidency must be the product of a consensus and not of primary ones.
“Reaching consensus depends on visible leaders and on putting personal aspirations. The primaries can be complicated because fragmentation can occur, ”Vargas revealed.
Last Friday, the Political Council of Pachakutik in a meeting they held decided not to accept proposals for correism, prefer consensus among potential candidates for the presidency. Among the names that sound are: Jaime Vargas, Leonidas Iza, are Yaku Pérez, Lourdes Tibán and Salvador Quishpe.
Iza recognizes the support of a sector of the population for his possible candidacy, but does not yet define his position. “When I make a decision I will convene a press conference. Meanwhile we will work to strengthen our organizations, ”he said.
By April 18 they will hold the third national meeting of the Peoples Parliament, where they will also discuss the 2021 elections.
This month they will have an extended Council of CONAIE, where they cannot make decisions about possible candidates, but Vargas says they can establish a mandate to agree on the nominations.
Thus, the CONAIE leader revealing that there was an intention to divide Vargas and Iza. “I have always said: Leonidas Iza-Jaime Vargas. So we will hold. If they happen, things are between Jaime Vargas and Leonidas Iza. ”
