Sebastián Piñera: «Sometimes it is not only the will of men to abuse, but also the position of women to be abused». The president of Chile generated controversy stating that sometimes it is the women themselves that cause the abuse.
Chilean President Sebastián Piñera referred to “the position of women being abused.” By promulgating this Monday, in the Palacio de La Moneda, the “Gabriela Law”, which extends the typification of femicide.
Piñera reflected on the difficult cultural change that requires the overcoming of machismo and mistreatment of women, but he did it unfortunate way that generated immediate criticism in various sectors.
«Sometimes it is not only the will of men to abuse, but also the position of women to be abused … We have to correct the abuser and also tell the person abused that cannot allow that to happen, ”said the President.
Sebastián Piñera said that “sometimes it is not only the will of men to abuse, but also the position of women to be abused.” He also stressed the importance of “self-love” and a “very necessary attitude” for women to avoid being victims of violence.
Piñera said this in the approval of the so-called “Gabriela Law”, which will be responsible for giving justice to cases of murder of women at the hands of her partner and homicides committed on grounds of hatred due to gender.
According to the president, the legislation should have been passed “much earlier.”
“If we had it before, perhaps many cases that continue to occur would have been avoided,” he said. He added that the promulgation constitutes a “powerful signal, without any ambiguity.”
Until the approval of this measure, the law punished only those murders committed during marriage or living together, and did not take into account other types of relationships.
With the “Gabriela Law” crimes against women will be punished during a love affair, a sexual relationship, a courtship or by an ex-partner, as well as the murder of women who practice prostitution.
The name of the measure is related to the case of Gabriela Alcaíno and her mother, murdered in June 2018 by the girl’s ex-boyfriend in a case that shook the entire country. (C.D.A.)
