The spokesman for the Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Vladimir Legoida, affirmed that the unilateral sanctions of the European Union (EU) and its exclusion lists will not intimidate the religious institution.
“The arbitrary sanctions of Western countries have nothing to do with common sense, and the Russian Orthodox Church, headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, will not be intimidated by inclusion in any list,” the spokesman said in his account on the social network Telegram.
Legoida’s statements respond to the publication made today by the France Press agency, which reported the EU’s proposal to impose sanctions against the patriarch as part of its sixth package of measures.
“The more indiscriminate the sanctions become, the more they lose touch with common sense, the more distant it becomes to achieve peace, for which the Russian Orthodox Church prays during every Mass, by blessing of the Most Holy Patriarch,” Legoida wrote on Telegram.
Also, the spokesman stressed that Kirill confirms his commitment to peace in Ukraine “by helping all victims of the conflict” through the Russian Orthodox Church.
Today, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, speaking before the members of the European Parliament at the plenary session in Strasbourg, announced the content of the sixth package of sanctions that the EU bloc intends to impose against the Eurasian nation.
She stated that among other restrictions, the new measures will include a ban on the broadcasting of three Russian television channels.
