678 policemen have been dismissed from their positions in Ecuador

Among the offenses considered are: attempted homicide, homicide/assassination, organized crime, drug possession and trafficking, smuggling, extortion, contract killings, among others.

From 2018 to 2022, a total of 1,012 police officers were arrested for various crimes, of which 678 were dismissed and only in April of this year 53 were dismissed.

According to Diario El Comercio, the police commit the majority of infractions during their working hours. That is, during controls, operations and after the neutralization of criminals, for example, they are exposed to traffic mishaps, physical and verbal aggression.

The inspector of the National Police, Ramiro Ortega, assured that during the investigation the right to defense and due process are guaranteed, later an administrative summary is opened that gives rise to the investigation.

The cases are processed by the Chief of Internal Affairs and when it comes to provincial commands, it is done by the Zonal and Subzonal Chief who represents the Inspector General of the institution.

The Internal Regulations indicate that there are three types of offenses: minor or first class, serious or second class, attempted or third class, the latter are known by a disciplinary court, which can issue a decision with discharge or dismissal, Severe repression and a fine of 5 to 7% of the monthly remuneration or suspension of the position for 20 or 30 days.

The General Police Inspectorate indicates that between 2021 and April of this year, only 4% of new cases were due to offenses considered very serious, among the latter are: attempted homicide, homicide/murder, organized crime, possession and trafficking of drugs, smuggling, extortion, contract killings, concussion, among others.
