The president of the National Union of Educators of Ecuador (UNE), Isabel Vargas, called on the country’s teachers to go on a hunger strike in defense of equal pay.
This pronouncement comes after the president, Guillermo Lasso, totally vetoed the Organic Law on Intercultural Education where this benefit was established.
“We reject the Presidential veto, since it contains allegations that have already been dismissed by the Constitutional Court.”
She recalled that there is a Court ruling indicating that the National Assembly does have the power to reform a rule where economic resources are generated.
In addition, she stated that this Monday, May 2, they are summoned to defend salary equality, since the President has shown a lack of political will for students, young people and tax teachers:
“On March 17, the president lied to the country when he said that he was going to comply with the sentence of the Constitutional Court and that the revaluation of teachers would be done progressively. However, on April 13 he affected the teaching profession”.
