THE JUDICIAL HOSTIGATION TO PICHINCHA UNIVERSAL INTENSIFIES

Editorial Position

There is no week in which the messenger of the Prosecutor’s Office does not arrive at the Pichincha Universal radio facilities with the paperwork of judicial harassment: subpoenas, requests for information and a series of requirements within the process initiated by the “Anti-Crime Unit transnational and international organized ”.

Now, this week, 25 journalists and workers from Pichincha Comunicaciones E.P. They must testify before the Judicial Police. The reason: to investigate what each of them did during the raid on October 8, 2019.

What does the “Judiciary” look for with this? Is there constitutional justification for acts of this nature against a public medium that has not committed any crime? Does the substantiation in a process initiated from a statement of an interview entail harassment and intimidation to all the personnel of an entity where they include journalists, administrators and janitors? Is it understood as a democratic act requirements that not even for criminal gangs have been made with their relatives or collaborators ?.

All this happens while the authorities, starting with the First and Second Presidents, insist that there is no restriction or persecution but “a legal process” to demonstrate that the Pichincha Universal radio called the popular uprising and citizen discord. There is not a single test, but the statements are collected without filter by those means that, hypocritically, denounce alleged acts of other governments and shut up the current one.

We will not fail any judicial appointment, we will comply with the law, but we will not stop reporting unjustified and disproportionate acts that are part of Lawfare, of a strategy to stigmatize the social and political media and organizations that expressed themselves about what happened in October of 2019.
We call the attention of international organizations for the defense of freedom of expression and human rights for such acts.

With absolute clarity we tell our audiences that, as a public medium, we will continue to exercise an office with responsibility, attached to ethics and respect for the Constitution.
