Prisons in Ecuador register an overcrowding of 14.38%

Overcrowding in the 36 prisons in Ecuador is 14.38%.

In December 2021, the percentage of occupation in prisons was 24%, according to the director of the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), Pablo Ramírez.

Ramírez assured that prison overcrowding will be eliminated by the end of 2022, since the goal is to reach 0%.

Ramírez explained that until the end of this year, at least 5,000 people deprived of liberty will be pardoned, based on Executive Decree 355.

So far, the Government has already pardoned 330 people who were in prison and who have already served between 40% and 60% of their prison sentence, for minor crimes.

“We have those people who should already be in pre-release, but with cumbersome procedures, we have simplified to reduce these requirements and that there are no vices of corruption,” he said.

In this way, by the end of 2022, the State hopes to reduce the prison population to 30,000 inmates in the country.
