ECU 911 received 2,300 emergencies due to animal-related events in the first quarter of 2022, 23% more than in the same period of 2021, where 1,875 cases were reported.
Last year, a total of 13,529 alerts related to animals were reported, 6,602 (49%) for urban fauna, 1,470 (11%) for the recovery of wild animals and 5,457 (40%) corresponding to other categories.
The cantons where this type of alert was received the most were: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Santo Domingo, Ibarra and others.
The objective of ECU 911 is to meet the needs of the population, whether in urban or rural areas. In the case of Quito, coordination is carried out with the Fire Department, the Metropolitan Emergency Operations Center (COE), the National Police, among other agencies.
The national director of Operations of the ECU 911, Carlos López, said that the entity has an emergency assistance protocol for urban or wild fauna, to attend to all the alerts that enter the system.
ECU 911 commented that the National Police has the Environmental Protection Unit (UPMA) that works constantly on the rescue.
Among the emergencies received is that of a young sea lion, in Galapagos, who had an object embedded at the height of his neck.
Another case is that of the rescue of a dog in the province of Bolívar, when the animal climbed onto the roof of a house.
Likewise, a boa was rescued in the province of Sucumbíos, which presented injuries to its abdomen that led to reconstructive surgery.
The ECU 911 made a call to citizens to alert about emergencies related to animals or wildlife through each of the operations rooms of the 17 centers.
