President of Ecuador will announce his veto on the Abortion Law

The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, will announce his veto of the Law to Guarantee the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy in Cases of Rape, approved by the National Assembly last February.

On Tuesday, February 15, Ecuador will know the President’s position on this issue a few days after the deadline for the Executive to cast its total or partial veto on this regulation, informed the government spokesman, Carlos Jijón.

The Legislative Plenary approved the bill with 75 votes in favor, 41 against and 14 abstentions on February 17, 2022. This bill establishes that women over 18 years of age may interrupt pregnancy in cases of rape until week 12; while for girls, adolescents and rural women it will be until week 18.

The creation of the Law occurred after the ruling of the Constitutional Court, in which it expanded the causes of non-punishable abortion and included all cases of rape.

Jijón assured that the Government will respect the judgment of the Court, but he advanced that any excess that the Assembly may have in this regulation is analyzed, with respect to the constitutional opinion.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, a massive peaceful demonstration took to the streets of Quito and other cities to demand, among other demands, the approval of a just and restorative Law. The government responded with a violent police crackdown.

While religious groups protested to demand a total veto outside the Carondelet Palace.
