Banana growers protest in Ecuador

Banana producers demand that the Government of Ecuador declare an emergency in the sector.

The banana growers ask for the immediate purchase of the oversupply of the fruit through a contingency fund. This in the face of concern about the low prices of the product. Currently, a box of bananas for export costs USD 1.00.

The banana growers request urgent measures to address the crisis in their sector. Likewise, the citizens declared persona non grata the Ad Honorem Government Minister, Juan José Pons, who has been the Executive’s spokesman in this area.

Last Friday, the authority explained that around 260,000 thousand jobs in the Ecuadorian banana sector are at risk due to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine; as well as 50,000 hectares that are in danger due to losses in the export of this product.

The counselor revealed that two weeks ago USD 4 million in losses were recorded due to the lack of export of 400,000 boxes of bananas to Russia and Ukraine.
