Carlos Jijón ratified the Government’s position of describing the decision of the Assembly to grant 268 amnesties to defenders of rights, nature and social fighters as unjust and irresponsible.
This Monday, March 14, Carlos Jijón, a government spokesman, said that they are analyzing the constitutional decisions to which they can turn to oppose the amnesties granted by the National Assembly to 268 defenders of rights, nature and political persecution.
In the Presidential Palace there was a change of strategy. Four days ago, when the 99 votes that gave way to the amnesty package became known, Diego Ordóñez, adviser to the President, said that they will respect the decision and will not take any legal action.
Jijón ratified the Government’s position of describing the Assembly’s decision as unjust and irresponsible “by letting those responsible not pay their guilt.” For this reason, he said, the Government studies the decisions that are framed in the Constitution and the Law to legally oppose what is resolved by the Ecuadorian Parliament.
There were 268 amnesties approved. 60 of them were for the case of those prosecuted for exercising their right to resistance and social protest in October 2019. The prefect of Pichincha, Paola Pabón; the Andean parliamentarian, Virgilio Hernández; the activist Christian González; the president and former president of CONAIE, Leonidas Iza and Jaime Vargas, respectively, are some of the beneficiaries.
“We were blamed for something we did not commit, my home was searched, I lost my freedom for 72 days. My family and I are calm again after 29 months, when we were held responsible for opposing a regime like Moreno’s, ”Pabón said about her amnesty.
For CONAIE, the decision of the Assembly “sets a precedent against the criminalization of protest, vindicates the social struggle, the right to resistance and democracy.”
From a sector of society, who rejected the Legislative decision, announced the presentation of a protection action.
