Several Ecuadorians in Ukraine have already been evacuated to Poland, confirms Foreign Minister Holguín

Several Ecuadorians who were in Ukraine have already been evacuated to Poland, according to Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín.

However, the minister did not detail the number or the names of the Ecuadorian citizens who have already left Ukraine, where conflicts are taking place on the border with Russia.

“Due to security issues, I cannot give the exact number, but we have managed to start the evacuation plan to the border since yesterday,” Holguín said in an interview with WQ Radio.

The foreign minister specified that Poland has accepted the entry of migrants without the need to present a Schengen visa and regardless of whether or not they are vaccinated against Covid-19.

Likewise, Holguín indicated that there are compatriots in cities such as Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, since they are still waiting for humanitarian corridors to be set up and the safety of people cannot be guaranteed.

He explained that the plan to evacuate Ecuadorians in this territory is being executed in phase one. This consists of transferring citizens to a safe border post in countries such as Poland, Hungary or Slovakia, where they will be placed in shelters.

Meanwhile, phase two consists of starting with the repatriation of Ecuadorian migrants; process which is voluntary.

On the other hand, Holguín explained that at the moment there are more than 1,300 Ecuadorian students in Russia. Of this total, in the areas near the border with Ukraine there are 948 citizens, so the responsibility for safeguarding the lives of compatriots has been transferred to Russia, he said.

“We have an emergency device to transfer the largest number of Ecuadorians to the interior of Russia,” stressed the foreign minister.
