In less than 24 hours, the fate of Jorge Luis Pérez, a 22-year-old Ecuadorian who lives in Kiev, Ukraine, changed. It is war.
Until yesterday, he was safe, at home, with enough food and waiting for the guidelines of the Ukrainian government, after the first Russian military intervention in the Ukrainian border cities.
At night, friends, acquaintances, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry and the Ukrainian Government itself asked them to leave Kiev. Along with four other Ecuadorians, Jorge Luis decided to leave the capital.
The five Ecuadorians traveled to Lviv, a city located in western Ukraine. “Last night I left Kiev, it is under attack. Some exits are blocked by the attacks, there are collapsed things and debris,” he recounted.
Normally a trip to this town would take about seven hours, but by taking alternate routes to avoid tanks, attacks, and stay safe, they made a 12-hour trip.
On the way: explosions, shots and dozens of tanks. They are five Ecuadorians who escaped from Kiev, Ukraine, by car.
“We came out with the fair ones,” repeated Jorge Luis, when considering that they could have stayed inside the city that was bombed this morning and be part of the victims that are accounted for today.
