The President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, and Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín spoke about the crisis in Ukraine, which has intensified in recent hours, and affirmed that Ecuador will respect the decisions made by the United Nations Security Council on this conflict. .
The authorities reported that they have contacted the majority of Ecuadorians in that country to facilitate transfer mechanisms to other countries such as Poland.
Likewise, Lasso expressed his concern for his compatriots who live on the border between Russia and Ukraine, a conflict zone.
“We are in permanent contact with our UN ambassador in New York, and we have given him guidelines to support La Paz, dialogue and security,” Lasso said.
For his part, Minister Holguín explained that the majority of Ecuadorians in Ukraine are students. Some of them are at home and others in shelters. Meanwhile, only 40 Ecuadorians have managed to leave Ukraine in recent weeks; while 700 migrants remain in that nation.
Likewise, the president specified that the return of Ecuadorians residing in that country is not mandatory.
