(Prensa Latina) Bolivian President Luis Arce announced today in a tweet that the improvement of the health care system is a priority of his government, highlighting the begining of free bone marrow transplants to save children’s lives.
“We invested more than Bs39 million (5.659.963 usd) in state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure adaptation. Health is our priority”, the president affirmed on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the website of the Ministry of Health and Sports, reported that the country made a leap in the quality of medicine by initiating this type of treatment free of charge at the pediatric hospital of La Paz, Doctor Ovidio Aliaga Uría.
The Minister of Health and Sports, Jeyson Auza, described this event as a “great advance”.
“We are initiating, by instruction of our brother President Luis Arce Catacora, this bone marrow transplant, this hematopoietic progenitor transplant that will allow us to give hope to our children and we must also mention that we have already performed a preparatory transplant on December 24, with complete success,” he said.
Auza revealed that in 2021 there were 2,710 cases of child cancer, and that four out of every 10 children diagnosed were leukemia patients.
From the age point of view, he said that the highest incidence is between four and two years of age, of which two have the possibility of entering bone marrow transplant treatment as the only hope of survival.
In Bolivia, the Unified Health Care System covers free care and treatment for children with oncological pathologies, and since 2019 the National Program to Fight Cancer guarantees economic resources to cover consultations, admissions, complementary studies, surgeries, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, among other requirements.
