(Prensa Latina) The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) today agreed to government demands and asked businessmen to put an end to company abuses in the electricity sector and pay for their consumption.
Coparmex -the entity that did the most to maintain its privileges to not pay for the electricity they use, receive indemnifications and be exempt from income taxes- called for a meeting with its members so that the companies pay services to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for energy transmission.
During his participation in an open parliament on the electricity reform promoted by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Jose Medina Mora Icaza, president of the business organization, requested not to make a reform, but secondary laws that adjust the 2013 energy reform.
Although he recognizes that it is very difficult for the Government to accept this variant since it minimizes the reform and diverts its objectives, the business leader admitted that it is time to make adjustments to the contracts, and to review the conditions of a reform that is already 9 years old, he said.
“We call on Coparmex and the business sector not to reform the Constitution but to make secondary laws, to build together a vision between the Government and the private sector with a long-term vision, where we see the CFE strengthened in the transition to clean energy, respect for the rule of law,” he said.
The request to abandon the electric reform and change it for secondary laws was immediately rejected by pro-government legislators, who questioned the businessman’s approach because it distorted the character of the presidential initiative.
Senator Alejandro Armenta Mier pointed out that the electric reform proposed by President Lopez Obrador is nationalist, as it seeks to exploit minerals that will be basic in the energy future.
