(Prensa Latina) The Amnesty for Political Prisoners Act, an executive decree sanctioned by President Xiomara Castro, has come to fruition in Honduras, after its publication on the Official Daily La Gaceta on Saturday.
This law resulted from the analyses carried out by MPs during the sessions at the National Congress, chaired by Deputy Luis Redondo, despite the ongoing political crisis in Congress due to two existing boards of directors since Jan. 23.
The provision will grant “general, broad and unconditional amnesty in favor of persons against whom public criminal action has been brought, who have been prosecuted or against whom a final and enforceable sentence has been issued at the courts of the Republic (…)”.
This law also benefits citizens who are being investigated for alleged crimes committted until the date in which this law came to effect and includes officials, employees and authorities elected during the administration from Jan.27, 2006, to Jun.28, 2009.
This law favors the victims of the coup d’état against former President Manuel Zelaya, those people wanted, accused or tried for opposing and protesting against it or acts under the exercise of their public service.
This Castro administration’s initiative also favors people exercising their constitutional right to social protests and those who demonstrated to defend national sovereignty, democracy, the safeguard of their territories, lands, water sources, in favor of their communities.
