Economic, social damage caused by Israel’s blockade to Gaza denounced

(Prensa Latina) More than 1.5 million of 2.3 million people in Gaza live under the poverty line due to the blockade Israel has imposed on the Palestinian coastal enclave since 2007, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor denounced on Tuesday.

In its annual report, the non-governmental organization documented the effects of the punitive measure adopted by Tel Aviv against the inhabitants of the territory and exacerbated by systematic military attacks, the latest ones in May 2021.

Despite the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the succession of seven Israeli governments since the beginning of the blockade, the collective punishment policy against the Gaza population continues, the report denounced.

As an example, the document mentioned an increase in unemployment from 23.6 percent before the imposition of the blockade to 50.2 percent in late 2021, while poverty rose from 40 to 69 percent.

The territory’s economy has been paralyzed since then, following the nearly total closure of the commercial crossings, the report noted.

In this regard, it highlighted that Gaza’s contribution to Palestine’s economy halved to reach only 18 percent by 2021.
