In just one week, 44 new cases of the Ómicron variant have been registered in six provinces of the country, reaching a total of 68 people infected with this new variant, until this Monday, January 3, 2022.
This was announced by the Ministry of Health, through a statement, in which it details that Guayas and Pichincha lead the list of people infected with 33 and 30 cases, respectively.
In contrast, in Napo, Chimborazo and Cotopaxi one positive case of Omicron is reported in each province; while in Tungurahua there are two people with the variant.
The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, has not ruled out that there are more cases of Omicron in other parts of the country and warned that this alteration is more contagious.
“Omicron is extremely contagious, we probably have a lot more Omicron cases at the community level, but the Delta variant is still prevalent in the country,” she said.
Despite the increase in cases of the new variant, Delta continues to predominate in Ecuador with 1,256 cases; it is followed by Mu, with 542; Iota, with 353; Gamma, with 345; Lambda, with 304; and alpha, with 266 cases.
In total, 3,353 cases of mutations have been found, including Omicron.
The health entity specified that in recent weeks, there has been an increase in infections, which responds to the crowds and events corresponding to Christmas and New Year’s holidays and events.
