Guayaquil doctors, together with local and national authorities, reported on the city’s epidemiological report, after the Christmas and New Year’s festivities.
Officials confirmed that there is an accelerated trend of increasing COVID-19 infections, unlike the penultimate week of the previous year. Those days there was already evidence of a slight increase in the number of infected, with a doubling of cases, they indicated at a press conference given this morning in the city.
“The issue is quite serious, we have a very high number of infections. Therefore, this week we are going to urge certain ministries, because they are not municipal powers, to make some changes. Among them, requesting, for example, telecommuting”, said Allan Hacay, secretary of the local COE and director of municipal Risks.
Carlos Farhat, epidemiologist and director of the local COE Health Table, said that in intensive care rooms (ICU) of hospitals, there are 52 occupied beds and 103 in general hospitalization, due to the virus. Regarding mortality, according to data from the Civil Registry, five deaths from COVID-19 are currently reported per day.
The authorities also indicated that the tests to find out if the person was infected with COVID-19 have increased, and that the vaccination brigades continue at different points in the city.
