After the oil spill in the Piedra Fina sector, in the province of Napo (Ecuador) due to the rupture of pipes of the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline (OCP), the communities surrounding the Coca River have warned of contamination of its waters.
In videos that circulate on social networks, the contamination of the river is observed. Likewise, community members are heard warning:
“Crude oil is 100% contaminating the Coca River, please help us communicate with the different communities and colleagues who are along the river.”
Likewise, from the Alliance of Organizations for Human Rights they denounce that communities such as Kichwa Sardinas, Orellana, or the Pandayaku community have not been alerted about this oil spill, which represents a danger to the communities due to water contamination.
Meanwhile, the company OCP Ecuador S.A reported that after the incident, cleanup and environmental remediation actions have been initiated, as well as the process of repairing the pipeline in the Piedra Fina sector.
The pumping of crude oil has been stopped as a preventive measure and will be restored when the appropriate conditions for the effect are met.
According to the company’s statement, a communication plan has been deployed to keep the communities informed about the progress of the incident.
