Approximately 1 in 3 children suffer from chronic child malnutrition in Ecuador
Erwin Ronquillo, technical secretary of “Ecuador Grows without Child Malnutrition” warned that the most recent data on chronic child malnutrition in the country is from 2018, in a study carried out by the Ministry of Health.
At that time, the figure reached 27.2%, but, as the official explained, several things have happened that have worsened this situation.
“On the one hand, in Ecuador, the high levels of poverty, extreme poverty and the pandemic have worsened services for pregnant mothers and children until the last two years,” said Ronquillo.
He warned that currently one in three children suffer from chronic child malnutrition.
Given this, the Government announced that a new nutritional aid assistance will be delivered that will be called the 1,000-day bonus, whose purpose is to help the nutrition of boys and girls from the first days of life, which range from conception to the two years of age.
“That stage of life known as the window of opportunity is key, because between 80 and 85% of a child’s neural connections are developed.”
This financial aid will be delivered in the coming weeks. The MIES and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are already working on the management of resources so that in the coming weeks it will be formally announced by President Lasso.
