The government of Ecuador received, this Tuesday, January 18, 2022, a new International Technical Assistance from the European Union to encourage trade in agricultural products within the framework of its project called “green pact”, (Green deal).
The European Green Deal aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, for which the European Union aims to invest and promote profitable, fair and socially balanced projects, among these projects is the so-called “From farm to table ” (From farm to fork); In the case of Ecuador, financing of 873,180 euros (about 988,444 dollars) has been allocated and the guidelines were shared yesterday during a virtual meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Agency for the Regulation and Control of Agricultural Quality.
The project will be implemented for eighteen months, will cover the entire national territory and will have the monitoring and advice of four international experts, in order to cover the sanitary and phytosanitary aspects related to the main requirements demanded by the European market.
The delegates of this initiative pointed out that the European Community “seeks to obtain a secure, permanent supply and with production volumes that can be quickly adapted to the growth in demand with competitive prices”; These resources will above all try to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), producer associations and cooperatives that have suffered the hardest impact during the pandemic.
José María Medina, head of EU Cooperation in Ecuador, highlighted the efforts of this community to promote a more environmentally friendly economic reactivation, being optimistic and hoping that “small producers take advantage of «The Trade Agreement that, every time, has better results.”
As indicated, during the virtual meeting, “Agriconsulting Europe S.A.” (AESA), will be the company responsible for the financial follow-up, while “AGRER S.A.-N.V.”, will be in charge of the technical, logistical and quality control follow-up of the project.
This investment is part of the 10 million euros that the EU has promised to deliver to combat the adverse effects that the pandemic has generated on trade in the region and is focused on opening new opportunities within the framework of the Trade Agreement between the European Union and Ecuador that was signed in 2017.
