This Friday, January 14, 2022, three people deprived of their liberty were found dead in the Santo Domingo Deprivation of Liberty Center and one in the Azuay No. 1 Deprivation of Liberty Center.
This was confirmed by the Comprehensive Care Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), this Friday afternoon.
According to the entity, there were no signs of violence on the bodies of the four inmates.
The SNAI reported that they began investigations with the Prosecutor’s Office to determine the circumstances of each one’s death.
The four inmates join the three prisoners murdered in the Esmeraldas prison on January 11.
The prison crisis worsens with incidents recorded in the Guayaquil prison this week. There were altercations in the Litoral Penitentiary, which were controlled by the Police. In addition, there was an attack against the director of the women’s prison in Guayaquil.
It is still unknown if these last two events are related. Human rights groups warn that the crisis in the prison system has not yet been overcome, after the four massacres recorded in 2021, which left more than 320 inmates murdered.
