Mexico announces US approval to buyout of oil refinery in Texas

(Prensa Latina) Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced Wednesday that Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to sell the controlling interest in the Deer Park refinery in Houston, Texas.

During Mexican president´s morning press briefing, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard showed the official purchase-sale document agreement between the US company and the Director of Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) Octavio Romero.

Mr. Romero recalled that the plant was built at the end of the last century, a 51-49 joint venture in favor of Shell, which made Shell make the decisions instead of Mexico.

Now, he said, PEMEX is total owner of the refinery, which allows all fuels to be produced by Mexico and also integrated into the domestic self-sufficiency program for gasoline and other oil by-products.

The oil refinery produces 131,000 barrels of gasoline daily, 89,000 of diesel and over 30,000 oil by-products.

Deer Park refinery is rated 16 in capacity among 129 active refineries placed in the United States, said the PEMEX director.
