Ecuadorian workers announce national strike for January 2022

The Unitary Front of Workers of Ecuador (FUT), the Popular Front and workers’ organizations announced mobilizations in the country, for next January 19, 2022.

This was one of the resolutions after the XV National Convention of the FUT and its base organizations, held last weekend, in which the labor situation in the country and the national situation were analyzed.

The reason for this mobilization day is the defense of institutions and strategic state assets such as CNT, Electric Companies, Petroleum Companies, Banco del Pacifico; after the announcement of President Guillermo Lasso to sell these assets of the State.

Another of the workers’ decisions was to declare 2022 as the year of unity, organization and resistance to stop the policies of the national government.

Likewise, they demand from the National Assembly the qualification, treatment and approval of the Organic Labor Code, proposed by the FUT; the reform of the Organic Law of Higher Education; the Organic Code of Food Sovereignty; and the reform of the Monetary and Financial Law.

The unions also urge the Legislature to repeal the Economic Development Law and anticipate that more sit-ins will be called and other mobilization actions will be used during this month, outside the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Finance and the Constitutional Court, to present unconstitutional actions to the Economic and Tax Development Law.

Meanwhile, they demand the departure of the Minister of Labor, Patricio Donoso, due to what the workers considered as “demonstrated incapacity and negligence in the handling of this state portfolio.”
