Uruguayans demand fairness in campaign on controversial law

Montevideo, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) The Commission for a referendum to repeal 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) in Uruguay claimed today to the government the same space it used to defend them in a call to journalists.

The referents of the commission, the former senator of the Frente Amplio Rafael Michelini and the leader of the teachers union José Olivera, wrote in a letter to the Presidency of this nation that “it is neither fair nor democratic that public resources are put at the service of only one of the two options”.

The Executive Power summoned the communicators to a “technical workshop” on the LUC, in charge of the pro-secretary Rodrigo Ferrés, at the same headquarters, which caused critical reactions from legislators of the pro-amplista front.

Senators Óscar Andrade, Mario Bergara and Alejandro Sánchez noted that the governing coalition neglected to explain the contents of a legislation of almost 500 articles when it was approved, and now will do so in view of the imminent referendum.

Micheleni announced that the Electoral Court only needs to validate 80 thousand signatures of the 671 thousand necessary to call for the popular consultation.

“We are completely sure that in 10 or 15 days we will reach this figure”, he emphasized.

In the letter of complaint, he stated that “as a commission for the “yes”, which wants to eradicate those 135 articles, we want to be given the same place to summon journalists and media to explain why”.

Dozens of social organizations mobilized for the collection of signatures in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic added up to almost 800 thousand that they delivered last July, just one year after the promulgation of the objected LUC.
