Buenos Aires, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) The Falkland Islands were, are and will be part of Argentina, President Alberto Fernandez said on Friday after noting there is no doubt of this country’s right over that territory in dispute with the United Kingdom.
At a ceremony at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry, the president launched an Interministerial Working Table devoted to create strategies to spread and raise awareness about national sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, at a meeting where he said that, regardless what some people think, “we will not change those islands for vaccines or debt.”
During the meeting, the president said some people minimize those lands and dare to say that we should pay for vaccines by handing over those islands.
He said he is amazed at the fact that they say it in public. “We will not change the Falkland Islands for anything; we will fight on until they are Argentinian again”, he said clearly referring to the words of former Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich.
Fernandez highlighted that being sovereign today is not asking anyone for permission to create a government program; it is recovering the capability of handling that debt so that the Argentinian people does not suffer. We exercise sovereignty every day, he said.
Argentina and the United Kingdom have maintained a dispute that ended in an armed conflict, which killed 650 Argentinian fighters and 255 British soldiers in 1982.
On several occasions, this nation has urged its counterpart to resume talks to make progress in the negotiation to give a peaceful and long-lasting solution to the controversy.
