The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that President Donald Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Suleimani, commander of the elite Quds Forces, during an attack in Iraq.
Press reports indicated that in the early hours of this Friday, U.S. forces carried out a drone strike at the international airport of Baghdad.
The airstrike was authorized by President Trump and was aimed at “deterring future Iranian attack plans.”
In addition to Soleimani, seven others were killed in the attack, including military officer Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, second in command of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) of Iraq.
The Iranian authorities pledged to exact “crushing vengeance” on Washington for killing its top military commander.
While the Pentagon reported in a statement: ‘At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani.’
The situation in Iraq escalated Tuesday when Shia protesters attempted to storm the gates of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad following airstrikes on an Iran-backed unit of Kataib Hezbollah operating in the country.
