3,532 persons deprived of liberty of foreign origin will be repatriated due to the prison crisis in Ecuador

The National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) will repatriate 3,532 foreigners, as one of the first measures to reduce overcrowding in prisons, in the context of the crisis in the country’s prison system.

Fausto Cobo, director of SNAI, told an interview for the online medium “Andrés el mono López”:

“We are experiencing a structural crisis in the Ecuadorian prison system but it is an effect of a greater crisis in the country in relation to the integral security of Ecuadorians.”

The director assured that they have begun an approach with the Foreign Ministry to carry out the negotiations with the authorities of other countries and start with the repatriation.

Likewise, the SNAI indicated that 1,935 detainees come from Colombia, 1,225 ppl come from Venezuela, 135 people are from Peru, 59 will be repatriated to Mexico and 178 ppl are from other countries.

On the other hand, the judges will receive a petition to release prisoners who have served a large part of their sentence, who are not a risk to society or have a catastrophic illness.

Since the beginning of 2021, 110 prisoners have been killed after fights between rival gangs (presumably between Choneros, Lagartos, Tiguerones and Lobos) inside the prisons of Latacunga, El Turi, the Litoral Penitentiary and others in the system’s network. penitentiary.

The last violent altercation occurred last week, where 27 people died, in the Litoral Penitentiary and in the Latacunga prison.

To stop the altercations 1,200 policemen entered to carry out a search. In the operation, weapons, cell phones and internet equipment were seized.
