Assembly members of Ecuador prevented an investigation into Lenín Moreno for the loan of military material to Bolivia

The legislative benches of Pachakutik (PK), Democratic Left (ID), CREO, independents voted against the investigation of the loan of anti-riot equipment to the Bolivian government of Jeanine Áñez, by former Ecuadorian president Lenín Moreno.

Assemblywoman Viviana Veloz (UNES) requested that the National Assembly supervise the delivery of tear gas and pellets to Bolivia, which would have been used to repress the protests against the coup in Bolivia.

Veloz’s motion received 52 affirmative votes, 23 negative and 56 abstentions, therefore it was not approved. The aforementioned blocks abstained.

The motion for a resolution stated:

Article 1.- Condemn the Ecuadorian authorities who, in November 2019, delivered anti-riot equipment and pellets to repress the Bolivian people, in order to consolidate the police and military coup that brought Jeanine Añez to the de facto power of the State Plurinational of Bolivia

Article 2.- To request Mr. César Monge, Minister of Government, and Mrs. Tannya Varela, general commander of the National Police, to appear before the Plenary of the National Assembly, so that all information regarding the delivery of tear gas can be received and Balinese in November 2019 to the Plurinational State of Bolivia.

The proponent, Viviana Veloz, pointed out that 37 deaths, 800 wounded, hundreds of exiles and arbitrary arrests add up to the balance left by the repression orchestrated by continental fascism, in the coup in Bolivia.

How does Pachakutik justify his abstention to demand an answer for the crimes against Bolivian brothers in complicity of Moreno? Will they have the face to return to their indigenous and peasant communities without defending human life ?, questioned parliamentarian Esther Cuesta (UNES).
